Massachusetts is home to a large, highly specialized and growing bioscience industry. The state is a national leader in the biosciences in industry size, concentration, and in the performance of its innovation ecosystem. Massachusetts' bioscience industry employed nearly 78,000 in 2012 across 2,090 business establishments. Massachusetts' 3.5 percent job growth in the biosciences since 2007 was driven primarily by strong gains in research, testing and medical labs. The state is among the top tier of states in the size and concentration of its bioscience and biomedical research complex with academic and other research institutions receiving nearly $2.4 billion in NIH funding in 2013.
